Actors are responsible for the maintenance and development of their skills. Students cannot just be passive recipients, dutifully obeying the tutors. They are the ones in class, they are doing the exercises and the improvisations.

If they do not commit themselves fully to this work, if they are not actively engaged in it, they are wasting their own and everyone else’s time.

Actors cannot just be pawns or puppets manipulated by directors. They must use rehearsal work as a basis for their own private work, which they then feed back into the production.
